Manufacturers: Graduates Are not Workforce-ReadyFor millions of college and high school students who graduated in the past few weeks, the thrill of receiving diplomas along with tearful congratulations has, no doubt, begun to fade, replaced by worries about finding gainful and rewarding employment.

One bit of good news is that, for those with the interest and aptitude, the manufacturing industry presents some great career opportunities right now. Depending on whose numbers you believe, there are currently hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. going unfilled, largely because employers, they say, can’t find candidates with the right mix of science, technology, engineering, and math skills.

The presence of a skills shortage in manufacturing was reinforced by a survey of manufacturing executives recently conducted by the Manufacturing Leadership Council. The survey of 226 manufacturing leaders revealed that 34% of them say they are struggling to find qualified salaried workers, and 38% said they are struggling to find qualified hourly workers. Respondents said they expect this situation to continue.
